Zoo Director Biswajit Das confirmed that the cubs were born on May 11 to a tigress brought from West Bengal last year as part of an animal exchange programme. With this birth, the total tiger count at the zoo has risen to five, igniting excitement among wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists alike.

“This is a first for us. The cubs and their mother are healthy and under close observation,” said Mr. Das.

To ensure the safety and comfort of the new mother and her cubs, 11 CCTV cameras have been installed for 24/7 surveillance. Meanwhile, the male tiger has been relocated from the enclosure as a precaution.

Visitors, for now, will have to wait to meet the new residents—public access to the enclosure is restricted to avoid disturbing the tigress and her little ones.

The zoo is making sure the mother is well-fed with fresh meat and nourishing soup, to ensure she produces ample milk for her cubs. The last known attempt at tiger reproduction in the zoo was in 2014, which unfortunately ended in the birth of a stillborn cub.

Sepahijala Zoo continues to be a major attraction, drawing nearly 1.70 lakh visitors in 2024-25. With this joyful milestone, it is poised to become an even more prominent player in India’s conservation landscape.
