Tucked away in the dense forests along the banks of the Gomati River in Tripura lies one of India’s hidden archaeological marvels — Chabimura, also known as Devtamura, meaning “Hill of Gods” or “Hill of Pictures.” This captivating site is home to giant rock-cut sculptures of Hindu deities, masterfully etched into vertical cliff faces, and surrounded by lush greenery, creating an experience that’s as spiritual as it is scenic.
What is Chabimura?
Chabimura is a lesser-known historical site famous for its massive rock carvings, many of which depict deities like Shiva, Vishnu, Kartikeya, Mahisasurmardini Durga, and Ganesa. These carvings are embedded on 90-degree steep rock walls and date back to anywhere between the 8th and 16th centuries AD, though exact dating remains debated among scholars.
Despite their historical importance, the creators and carving techniques behind Chabimura remain shrouded in mystery.

The Art and the Mystery
There are around 50 rock panels at Chabimura, many of which are best viewed by boat ride along the Gomati River—a journey often likened to cruising through the Amazon jungle.
Highlights include:
- First Panel: Pancha Devata
Features five deities — Shiva, Vishnu, Kartikeya, Ganesa, and Shakti — with their vahanas. The sculpture is a staggering 10.3 meters high and 28 meters wide. - Brishavahana Shiva
Depicts Shiva riding Nandi, holding a damaru, carved with exceptional detail. - Mahisasuramardini (Chakrak Ma)
The centerpiece of Chabimura, this colossal relief of Goddess Durga is one of the largest depictions of the goddess in India, standing 10.70 meters tall and 7.70 meters wide. She is shown slaying the buffalo demon with ten arms, a round face, Medusa-like hair, and a lion as her vahana. She is revered locally as Chakrak Ma.

The Legend of the Hidden Treasure Cave
The site also includes the mysterious Chabimura Cave, linked to the legend of King Chichingfa, who allegedly hid treasure inside, guarded by a python. Locals believe the cave is spiritually protected by Chakrak Ma.
The trek to the cave involves a narrow trail, mossy stairs, and a gentle stream — a mystical experience amid the jungle.
