Tucked away in the dense forests along the banks of the Gomati River in Tripura lies one of India’s hidden archaeological marvels — Chabimura, also known as Devtamura, meaning “Hill of Gods” or “Hill of Pictures.” This captivating site is home to giant rock-cut sculptures of Hindu deities, masterfully etched into vertical cliff faces, and surrounded by lush greenery, creating an experience that’s as spiritual as it is scenic.

What is Chabimura?

Chabimura is a lesser-known historical site famous for its massive rock carvings, many of which depict deities like Shiva, Vishnu, Kartikeya, Mahisasurmardini Durga, and Ganesa. These carvings are embedded on 90-degree steep rock walls and date back to anywhere between the 8th and 16th centuries AD, though exact dating remains debated among scholars.

Despite their historical importance, the creators and carving techniques behind Chabimura remain shrouded in mystery.
