GB Hospital 24×7 Emergency OT: New Dedicated Facility to Save Lives in Agartala
Agartala | Tuesday, December 23, 2025: For thousands of patients across Tripura who rely on the state’s premier referral center, there is finally some major news to cheer about. The Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital, or simply GB Hospital, has officially inaugurated a dedicated GB Hospital 24×7 Emergency OT (Operation Theatre). This new unit, located within the New Teaching Hospital (NTH) block, is designed to ensure that critical patients no longer have to wait in a queue for life-saving surgeries.
With the massive influx of patients from all eight districts, the main operation theatres were often overburdened. The launch of this round-the-clock facility is a strategic move to separate routine surgeries from emergency trauma cases.
Why Tripura Needed the GB Hospital 24×7 Emergency OT
Currently, GB Hospital handles an average of 30 to 40 major surgeries every single day. While the hospital is already equipped with 19 major and 10 minor operation theatres, the “emergency rush” often caused scheduling conflicts.
According to senior medical officials, the GB Hospital 24×7 Emergency OT will solve three major problems:
- Zero Waiting Time: Critical trauma and accident victims will be wheeled into surgery immediately.
- Uninterrupted Service: Unlike routine OTs that might close after scheduled hours, this unit will have surgeons and anesthesiologists on standby 24/7.
- Better Patient Outcomes: In emergency medicine, the “Golden Hour” is everything. This facility ensures surgery starts within that window.
Inside the New NTH Block Facility
The new emergency OT has been set up with the latest surgical equipment and a specialized anesthesia workstation. Dr. Bhaskar Majumder, a prominent anesthesiologist, noted that the state health department worked tirelessly to ensure the staff—including specialized nursing officers—were trained and deployed specifically for this emergency wing.
Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Kanak Choudhury confirmed that while the hospital is already doing the heavy lifting for the state’s healthcare, this addition strengthens the “NTH Unit One and Two” complex, making it a hub for advanced critical care.
The Road Ahead: Cutting Down Out-of-State Referrals
One of the core missions of the current state administration is to minimize the “referral culture,” where patients are sent to hospitals in outside states like West Bengal or Assam. By bolstering the GB Hospital 24×7 Emergency OT capacity, Tripura is moving closer to being self-sufficient in handling high-level trauma.
Furthermore, the hospital management has hinted that another major OT is nearing completion at the Trauma Care Centre. Once both are fully operational, Agartala will possess one of the most robust emergency surgical setups in the Northeast.
