In a dramatic turn of events, Indigo Flight Mayday call issued due to fuel shortage and made emergency landing in Bengaluru. IndiGo Flight 6E-6764 was traveling from Guwahati to Chennai, made an emergency landing at Kempegowda International Airport (Bengaluru) on June 19, 2025.

IndiGo Flight Mayday Call: What Went Wrong?

According to official and media reports, the Airbus A321 aircraft carrying 168 passengers was unable to land in Chennai due to what IndiGo initially claimed as “traffic congestion” and an unstabilized approach. This forced the pilot to perform a “go-around” maneuver—a missed landing attempt—around 7:45 PM.

But the real panic began when the flight was just 35 miles away from Bengaluru. The pilot sent out a Mayday call due to critically low fuel, prompting Air Traffic Control (ATC) to prepare for an emergency situation.

A “Mayday” call, derived from the French “m’aidez” meaning “help me,” is a globally recognized signal used only during life-threatening situations.

Bengaluru ATC to the Rescue

Thanks to a swift response by Bengaluru ATC, ground teams including fire and medical personnel were on high alert. The aircraft safely touched down at 8:20 PM, averting a potential disaster.

Inside the aircraft, however, panic had already set in. One passenger described the sudden and steep climb during the go-around as terrifying, leaving many “on the edge of their seats”, according to TOI.

Pilots De-Rostered, Investigation Underway

Though IndiGo Flight Mayday call confirmed and cited bad weather and traffic at Chennai as causes, Chennai ATC disputed this, stating there was no congestion at the time. Sources have indicated that the flight may not have had the mandatory minimum diversion fuel, raising serious safety questions.

While IndiGo has not publicly confirmed any disciplinary actions, sources suggest both pilots were de-rostered following the incident—pointing to an internal investigation by the airline.

Post-landing in Bengaluru, a new set of pilots flew the aircraft to Chennai, where it landed safely at 11:25 PM. Passengers were left shaken but relieved.
