This special day reminds us of the vital role played by civil servants behind the scenes, from maintaining law and order to implementing development programmes and policies.
Why April 21 ?
The date holds historical importance. On April 21, 1947, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Home Minister, addressed the first batch of newly appointed civil servants at Metcalfe House in Delhi. In his famous speech, he called civil servants the “steel frame of India,” highlighting their importance in building and maintaining a strong nation.
Sardar Patel also advised the officers to maintain honesty, discipline, and political neutrality. He said, “A civil servant must remain committed to integrity and never engage in politics or communal matters.”
Celebration in 2025
This year, the Government of India is organizing a grand event at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The day-long conference includes speeches, award ceremonies, and presentations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the gathering and share his thoughts on the importance of innovation in public service. He will also present the Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Administration. These awards recognize the best-performing districts and government bodies for their innovative and effective work.
