South Tripura District Magistrate Visits Sabroom, Pushes for Urgent Repairs in Flood-Hit Areas
Agartala, May 1 – In a significant step toward flood recovery, South Tripura District Magistrate Muhammad Sajad P paid a special one-day visit to Sabroom on Thursday, focusing on the extensive damage caused by the devastating August 2024 floods. The visit aimed to assess ground-level conditions and fast-track development efforts before the upcoming monsoon season.
During the visit, the District Magistrate inspected two major embankments in the Manughat area that were severely breached last year. He also evaluated damages to agricultural lands, fishery projects, and ponds that support local livelihoods.
The August floods had submerged vast areas of the Sabroom sub-division, severely impacting homes and infrastructure in Manughat and Daspara. Though initial relief measures were rolled out, this visit—carried out under a special directive from the Chief Minister—was focused on gauging the need for extended support and monitoring embankment restoration.
The South Tripura District Magistrate met with progressive farmers Krishna Chandra Das and Biswajit Majumder from Thaibong and Indira Nagar Panchayats, respectively—both of whom faced heavy losses. He commended their resilience and assured full administrative support for upcoming development initiatives.
He also personally inspected damaged embankments near the Manu River (Govinda Maidan and Barkhola area) and the Feni River at Daspara. Contractors were instructed to finish all critical embankment repair work within 15 days, underlining the urgency before the monsoon hits.
Local SDMs and block officers have also been tasked with submitting detailed reports outlining the additional support needed by affected families.
The DM was accompanied by South Tripura Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Deepak Dutta, Sabroom SDM Shivjyoti Dutta, BDO Anupam Das, Satcanda Panchayat Chairperson Prabhas Lodh, DCM Ratan Das, and Sub-Divisional Police Officer Nityananda Sarkar, among others.
