In a major push toward green energy, the Tripura government has unveiled an ambitious plan. Tripura to power all government buildings under solar power by March 2027. This announcement was made by Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on 4th May, during a recent media briefing, signaling a transformative shift in the state’s renewable energy landscape through PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

Solar Power for a Brighter Future

This move is part of the broader implementation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which promotes free electricity through solar energy for households across India. Tripura is now actively participating in the scheme with 13,536 families already registered online.

“For the first time, 70 consumers in the state received ₹30,902 each for installing solar systems at home,” the minister noted, highlighting the financial benefits being extended to early adopters.

So far, 266 households have installed solar panels, and 184 families have received government subsidies under the scheme. Additionally, 95 families have secured loans totaling ₹1.75 crore, enabling them to invest in sustainable power. Notably, 70 families are now enjoying zero electricity bills thanks to their solar setups. According to ANI, in an interview that shared in Minister’s social media X site.

Government Buildings to Go Green

Minister Nath confirmed that the government has initiated plans to equip all state-run buildings with solar systems, targeting 50,000 solar-powered consumers by 2027, which could potentially generate an additional 150 MW of power.

Currently, Tripura has no power shortage, with a peak demand of 370 MW and a generation capacity of 372 MW. However, authorities are focused on improving efficiency and bill collection to ensure sustainability.

Power Theft & Bill Payment Woes

Despite the progress, the minister expressed serious concern over low electricity bill payment rates. Out of 9.87 lakh power consumers, only 4.32 lakh are paying their bills.

In the last year, officials cracked down on 1,015 cases of power theft, disconnected 10,779 illegal hook connections, and imposed fines worth ₹4.19 crore, of which ₹3.37 crore has already been recovered.

What’s Next for Tripura’s Solar Mission?

With rising interest from residents and aggressive expansion plans for public infrastructure, Tripura is on track to become a solar-powered state. The Power Department is urging more eligible families to apply for subsidies and loans under the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana to make the most of this opportunity.
