Tripura villagers are raising concerns about a newly built embankment in Kalikapur, Bangladesh, fearing it may cause water blockage and flood risks in nearby Indian villages. The issue has become serious enough that Tripura PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte will visit the affected areas—Ballamukh and Ishan Chandranagar in Belonia subdivision—this Sunday to inspect the situation.
Bangladesh has constructed a strong embankment, 8 to 9 feet high, near Kalikapur village in Feni district. The structure is aimed at protecting their land from floodwaters flowing from the Indian side. However, villagers in Tripura believe this embankment might disturb the natural water flow and increase the chances of flooding in their villages.
Local residents from Uttar Belonia, Ballamukh, and Ishan Chandranagar have expressed deep worry over this development. Many fear that during the rainy season, floodwaters could get trapped, leading to serious damage on the Indian side.
According to MLA Dipankar Sen, the villagers are not against safety measures, but such construction should not harm neighboring Indian areas. The visit by Tripura’s Public Works Department Secretary is expected to bring clarity and offer solutions.
The Tripura government is taking the issue seriously, and steps are being taken to ensure that both nations can avoid future flood disasters by working together.
